Diesel Engine – Achievement and failures
Diesel engines has never been able to caught on in the passenger cars. However a rapid rise in the sales due to OPEC oil embargo, occured during the middle to late 70s. But this is the only real significant penetration that diesel engines have made in the market.
Although the diesel technology revolution has achieved a good target and made Diesel engines more efficient, still there are some historical problems that may have held them back. They are as following:
1.While comparing to gasoline engines, it produce more smoke to cause pollution as well as feeling vomiting and smell very funny.
2. The Diesel engines give more torque rather than higher horsepower and cause to make it slower when starts from a full stop as they tend to have lower RPM ranges than gas engines because of their weight and compression ratio.
3. With the view of economy, Diesel vehicles and engines are more expensives than gas.
4.These engines needs to be fuel injected and it was very expensive and less reliable in the past.
5.While talking about fuel supply, Diesel is less available than gas.
6.As far as sound pollution is concerned on the road Diesel engines plays a big role as they are much noiser than gas engines and tend to vibrate quite a bit.
7. Diesel engines tend to be havier than the gasoline engines because of its higher compression ratios.
8. One of the big problem that one would have faced is to get it start in cold weather and if they contain glow plugs the engine may require you to wait before you start the engine so that the glow plugs can heat up.
This is how Diesels engines has never been able to caught on in the passenger cars. One or two problems among these can be ignored but group of these problems is a big turn away for many people.
Though the above mentioned reasons were in the past due to which diesel never really took off,you can expect these reasons to be removed or improved in future with the latest technologies that means you will see more and more diesel vehicles on the road.
