A Little About Gasoline Engines

The well known gas engines are also called as internal combustion engines. These engines generally are of two categories:

1. Two cycle engines

2. Four cycle engines

One stroke of the piston or half revolution of the crank shaft is called a cycle of engine, as a complete revolution represents two cycles. In a two cycle engine, the power impulse occurs at each revolution, whereas in four cycle engines it occurs at every other revolution, hence the terms two and four cycle engines.

However both categories are made for some particular purpose hence have their own merits. For instance- The four cycle engines are mostly used for automobiles. On the other hand for two cycle engines are fit in motor boat.

Gas engine’s horse power is entitled as HP and also brake test HP. The IHP is the theoretical HP, which is found by figuring different formulas,in which the diameter of the bore, length of the stroke in inches, and number of revolutions per minute form the basis for calculation.  The results are found by the use of such formulas.

On the other hand, the power that engine develops actually in service is called BHTP, which is considerably less than the IHP. Remember this depends upon the degree of the mechanical perfection attained in the construction of the same. When both the construction and compression are good, the engine should actually reach 80 – 88% of the intended IHP.

High HP and high RPM ranges are what that makes gasoline engines popular. The important reason which makes gas engines more popular over diesel engines is they can achieve more speed. Therefore If you are looking for speed then nothing like gasoline vehicle can do for you. However they are missing torque and raw power like diesel engine but it they are make up for it with speed and tuning options.
